Newsletter No 3, Friday 11 April
Principal Report
This term, our students have truly embraced the spirit of our values, Courage, Connection and Growth across classrooms, co-curricular programs and house-based activities.
Our house system continues to strengthen the sense of identity and connection across both campuses. This term we saw fantastic engagement in a range of house activities. The energy, creativity and camaraderie on display have helped foster strong relationships between students and staff and it’s been a joy to see our school culture continue to grow in such positive ways.
Our Bespoke Year 9 Horizons program launched with real momentum this term, offering students the chance to connect their learning to the real world through innovation, critical thinking, collaboration and personal and social responsibility. A key feature of Horizons is allowing students to achieve their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. Students are working on their goals in volunteering, physical activity and skill development. The Adventurous Journey component saw students take on both day trips exploring Hobart and a memorable expedition to Bruny Island. These journeys tested their resilience, teamwork, and appreciation of the natural world while giving them experiences they’ll remember for years to come. Through this and other Horizons opportunities, we are seeing students develop not just knowledge and skills, but confidence, purpose, and a greater sense of agency in their learning.
Another valuable experience this term was our students’ visit to the Careers Expo, where they explored future education, training and employment pathways. It was fantastic to see students engaging with industry professionals, asking thoughtful questions, and imagining the possibilities that lie ahead. Opportunities like these help students feel confident and informed as they begin shaping their own futures.
This term we proudly hosted our second Thinking Forward Forum. These Forums are designed to co-construct innovative approaches to creating strong industry and school partnerships to improve our long-term outcomes for our young people. We welcomed over 40 representatives from industry, organisations and future learning providers. Student voice was critical to the success of the Forum with all participants gaining valuable insights and takeaways for the future.
As we look forward to Term 2, our focus on empowering young people to thrive academically, socially and emotionally remains front and centre. Thank you to our dedicated staff for their incredible work this term and to families and carers for your support, partnership and encouragement.
Wishing everyone a safe and restful break. We can’t wait to see you all again in Term 2 for more learning, growing and thriving together.
Year 9 Horizon Camp - Bruny Island
Our first official Horizons Adventure for our Year 9 group selected Bruny Island for a week of team building, positive risk taking and strengthening resilience. Our Adventure camps are designed to foster: personal growth, resilience, greater personal awareness, working collaboratively, appreciation of nature and realisation of their potential!

House Team Building
Our Year 9s took part in some amazing House team-building activities! It was an afternoon filled with fun, friendly competition and lots of laughter as students worked together to tackle challenges and support each other. These activities are about creating strong House bonds and fostering a positive, inclusive culture. A huge shoutout to everyone who participated and made it such a memorable afternoon! Let’s keep that House spirit alive as we continue to work together and make the most of every opportunity.

Year 10 Engineering Design
Students in Mr Barker’s Engineering Design 10 class have started the course by designing and building a chair. Students had to choose a person that they wished to design a chair for, identified their seating needs, and then followed the engineering design process. This included seeking feedback from others on their prototypes and communicating their final product. This is a great activity where students always come up with new and innovative designs!

Big Picture News
Harriet is a Year 9 Big Picture student. She is passionate about baking and is being mentored by former Hobart City High Student Eve Charlesworth at Jean Pascal Patisserie. Eve was runner up as School Based trainee of the year in 2024. It is great to see a former HCHS student helping others in our community.

LAYNA LEGENDS- TERM 1

In Term 1 this year, we have had a focus on meeting our fellow house members in each grade and engaging in team building activities. The House Captains worked hard to help run an activities session for each year group. The grade 9s and 10s participated in a circuit of 4 activities such as “The Floor is Lava” and creating our House name out of human bodies! The grade 7s and 8s participated in a “treasure hunt” outside, where they had to find 60 pictures of our House emblem (the platypus) and puzzle pieces that could be put together to spell out our House name. We have also been working on creating a House chant that reflects our spirit and incorporates our emblems of water and the platypus. This is what we’ve come up with so far:
We fight against the current,
We swim against the stream.
If you’re looking for the winners,
Then Layna is your team!
The Grade 8s have already tested out our chant in a “chant-off” against the other Houses and were amazingly loud and enthusiastic. We’re looking forward to continuing to build our House spirit in Term 2.
Just a little note for those who might not know that “Layna” rhymes with “finer”
