Message From The Principals
As we near the end of Term 2, it is with great pride and enthusiasm that we reflect on the incredible achievements and growth of our students at Hobart City High School. This term has been a testament to our collective commitment to fostering an environment where every individual can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Our students have demonstrated remarkable dedication to their learning. From achieving outstanding results in assessments to engaging deeply in classroom discussions, your hard work and perseverance have truly paid off. We commend each and every one of you for your commitment to academic excellence. Student reports will be sent home next week.
At Hobart City High School, we believe in nurturing not only academic success but also the personal growth and wellbeing of our students. Throughout this term, we have seen countless examples of Courage, Respect, Responsibility, Connection, and Growth in action. Whether through participating in extracurricular activities, industry visits, supporting one another in times of need, or taking initiative in community projects, our students have exemplified what it means to be responsible global citizens. We thank the numerous students who have shown great leadership supporting our feeder primary schools through a range of events.
As we look forward to Term 3, we are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. Our focus remains on providing a supportive and enriching learning environment where every student can continue to thrive. To ensure our continued success in semester 2 we remind students and families the importance of the values of courage, respect, responsibility, connection, and growth. We will have several students preparing the Solar Car Challenge and Tournament of Minds. Students and families will be completing the Wellbeing and Engagement Survey that provides us with important feedback to track our progress in school improvement.
We are excited to share that we are expanding our Year 11 and 12 offerings and are currently calling for expression of interest for 2025. We will continue to offer our highly successful Big Picture approach in Year 11 and 12. The Big Picture learning design is centred around students learning through their passions and interests and learning both in and out of school. Students do not have subjects, timetables, multiple teachers and classrooms or exams. Instead, they develop personal Learning Plans around their interests and connect their work to six rigorous Big Picture Learning Goals: 1. Empirical reasoning 2. Quantitative reasoning 3. Social reasoning 4. Communication 5. Personal qualities 6. Knowing how to learn.
Year 12 students in Big Picture Learning schools across Australia now use portfolios and interviews to apply for and gain entry to their first choice of university degree. They receive admission on the strength of portfolio evidence mapped to a new non-ATAR qualification, known as the International Big Picture Learning Credential (IBPLC).
In addition to Big Picture we will be launching the Centre for Career Innovation and Excellence. This is a highly supported pathway to genuine engagement with school and industry for students in Year 11 and 12. Students will be working towards TCE attainment as well as gaining industry insight and experience through a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship. Students will have access to university entry through the UTAS Schools Recommendation Program.
We will be holding a Year 11 and 12 specific information session on Thursday 25 July and Year 7-12 information session on Wednesday 31 July. These are wonderful opportunities to come and learn about our school culture, the diverse range of experiences and opportunities available and how we work to ensure our students are thriving academically, socially and emotionally. We hope to see you at one, or both, of these great events. See further information below.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our dedicated teachers, supportive families, and our enthusiastic students. Your collaborative efforts truly make Hobart City High School a special place to learn and grow.
Finally, we would like to share with our community that Ogilvie Campus Principal Andrew Hughes will be on leave in Term 3. We will welcome Holly Stewart back from her Hardie Fellowship and she will take over role of Ogilvie Campus Principal in Andrew’s absence, while Sarah Geale will continue as Acting Principal on the New Town Campus.
Wishing you all a restful and rejuvenating break. We look forward to seeing you in Term 3, ready to embrace new challenges and celebrate further successes.
Britany Roestenburg - Lead Principal
Andrew Hughes - Principal - Ogilvie Campus
Sarah Geale - Acting Principal - New Town Campus
Year 10 Camp To Wineglass Bay
The Year 10 Outdoor Education class got up early to see the stunning views of Richardsons Beach and The Hazards. After breakfast they ascended to the Wineglass Bay lookout and were rewarded with stellar views. They then trekked across the Isthmus and headed back along Hazards Beach to complete the 11km circuit. After a short rest and reenergise, they headed to Cape Tourville to grab some last light views down the coastline.
Library News
It has been a rewarding Term with 32 students signing up to be library monitors across both campuses. The students have a real workplace experience with an induction, a list of duties they work through and the opportunity to work in a team and independently under the guidance of library staff.
Here are some of our Year 7 library monitors with their pins, which were presented at assembly.
We are looking forward to Term 3 with excitement building for Book Week. The theme this year is Reading is Magic. Start planning a costume to suit the theme. It’s all about reading for pleasure.
Report From The Prefect Board
It has been a busy first two terms for the Prefect Board at HCHS. From getting acquainted with each other as leaders in the first few weeks to organising fun and meaningful events in the first and second terms. We have developed our leadership skills, made connections that will last beyond Year 10 and acted as positive role models for younger students, demonstrating our school's values of Respect, Growth, Courage, Responsibility and Connection.
In the first term, we worked with catering and sports students to organise our Harmony Week events, encouraging students to wear orange, serving delicious pancakes and entertaining our school with a football game, following our first ever whole school assembly. We had our first leadership forum where the entire Student Leadership Board, including our SRC and Year 9 House Captains, learnt about effective leadership and developed action plans to improve our school.
Prefects continue to be involved actively with community events, with many of us attending ANZAC Day services in Lenah Valley and at the Cenotaph in Hobart, where we laid wreaths in tribute to those who lost their lives fighting in war. Now our Prefect Board are hard at work organising our NAIDOC week activities for Week 1 Term 3, which will include free smashed potatoes courtesy of the wonderful Daly Potato Co. We would also like acknowledge OzHarvest, a charitable organisation that provides free food for those in need, and we are grateful for their support to help us obtain the food resources for our NAIDOC Week celebrations. There will be art activities and a fun game of footy. All in all, the first two terms of 2024 have been an amazingly productive time for HCHS’s Prefect and Leadership Boards.
News From Big Picture
Year 10 have been working brilliantly. Here are some of their success stories for the term.
Sophie is working towards a Certificate II in Community Pharmacy and recently completed her first unit. This qualifies her to distribute pharmaceutical medicines at her placement, Guardian Lenah Valley Pharmacy. She has now been offered paid work in the school holidays.
Belle recently completed a one-week internship at Hit 100.9, with the Content Director saying she has “loads of potential.”
Ryan has secured three internships – one at Salvos New Town, one at Wiggos, and a one-week placement at Green Electrical Tas.
Tetris interviewed one of the lawyers representing Julian Assange, and our newest Year 10 student, Maddie, has secured an ongoing internship at Timeless Hair Salon.
Congratulations to Year 12 Big Picture student Aleira. She has been shortlisted for the School-Based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year via the Tasmanian Training Awards. Aleira has been a School-Based Trainee at Tasmania’s Legislative Council since late in Year 10. She completed a Certificate II in Workplace Skills and a Certificate III in Business by the end of Year 11 and is currently undertaking a Certificate IV in Business. We are very proud of Aleira’s achievements and acknowledge her hard work and dedication to her position.
Aspiring Winemaker
I’m Oli Rofe and I’m a Year 11 student in Big Picture at HCHS. I am interested in wine making and I am doing my research projects and senior thesis in this area. I really enjoyed my recent internship at Frogmore Creek Winery. I learnt about what wines they make, how they make. I helped clean some vats, empty them with a vacuum pump to remove the by-product of grapes and filtering. I enjoyed working alongside the two winemakers at Frogmore Creek, head winemaker from France, Alain Rousseau (left) and John Bowen (right) from New Zealand. It was a great experience asking them questions and learning more about their processes in the winery and vineyard. The senior winemaker Alain also gave me some advice about university courses in South Australia that I am keen to apply for when I finish Year 12.
Hobart Human Library
The Hobart Human Library uses the art of storytelling to break down barriers and build empathy. It provides a safe space for ‘readers’ to speak informally with a human ‘book’. Our Year 8 students have been grateful for the opportunity to participate in workshops with local ‘books’. We asked questions, explored themes of discrimination and bias and took a moment to stand beside someone as they shared their experiences of disability, being a migrant, neurodivergence, trauma and gender with us.
Transition Program
At Hobart City High School we are committed to providing a quality transition program aimed at supporting a smooth and enjoyable transition for Year 6 students moving from our eight feeder primary schools to Year 7.
We know and understand this is an exciting but also quite daunting time for many young people.
Our transition program includes:
- Parent Information Evenings for prospective families and students (Terms 1,3)
- Ogilvie Campus tours led by the Principal, Mr Hughes (each term)
- Taster Day (Term 2)
- Alumni visits (Term 2)
- Feeder school writing competition (Term 3)
- Orientation Day for Year 6 students enrolled at Hobart City High School (Term 4)
The transition program requires a team effort. Thank you to all our staff, both teaching and non-teaching, who each contribute to the success of our transition program.
I would like to thank the 46 students from both the Year 7 SRC and our Year 8 Peer Support Leaders for doing an excellent job at supporting our staff and visiting Year 6 students throughout Taster Day on 11 June 2024. Your efforts helped make the day fun and ensured it ran smoothly.
Thank you also to our 70 students from Years 7 – 10 who were part of various small groups of students selected as alumni to visit each of our eight feeder primary schools to share a snapshot of their high school journey and their top transition tips. This year we selected a cross section of students from Year 7 – 10 with a range of interests, including student leaders, and students who have been involved in a range of extra-curricular experiences.
Thank you all for being excellent ambassadors of our school. What struck me was the pride and authenticity with which you shared your journeys.
Mandy Maree
Assistant Principal
Gifted And Highly Able Day
Students spent quality time on this day engaging with their online courses. We split into two groups and completed some team challenges with amazing creative results. One team even broke into an interpretative dance to portray their answer to a challenge. It was great to see Students extend themselves and demonstrate excellent teamwork.
Australian Defence Force Visit
Hobart City High School were lucky enough to have Grace and Jeremy from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) deliver a talk to 35+ motivated Year 9 and 10 students. Topics covered in the talk included entry pathways into the ADF, career progression, lifestyle, education and training opportunities, salary scales and ADF benefits and fitness and aptitude requirements. Our students engaged with some impressive question time for over 25 minutes, putting Grace and Jeremy through their paces who were able to answer all our questions about careers in the ADF.
News From Our School Health Nurse
July is National Eye Health Awareness Month, also known as "JulEYE." This annual campaign, led by The Eye Surgeons' Foundation, aims to raise awareness and improve eye health education in Australia.
Your young person may have a vision impairment if they struggle to see clearly up close or at a distance, even with glasses or treatment. Vision impairment can range from mild loss to blindness and can affect different parts of the eye or brain. Each person’s experience is unique, impacting their language, social skills, movement, and learning.
Here are some simple ways to protect your eyes:
Wear Sunglasses: Choose sunglasses that meet Australian standards to protect against UVA and UVB rays.
Get Regular Eye Tests: Early diagnosis makes treatment easier.
Eat a Healthy Diet: Proper nutrition can reduce the risk of vision problems.
Wear Eye Protection: Use proper protection at work and home to prevent injuries.
Don’t Smoke: Smoking is linked to serious eye health issues.
Beware of Digital Eye Strain: Remember to take regular breaks and follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
Did you know that our School Health Nurses, Anita and Hayley, can provide vision screenings? If you have concerns about your vision or your young person's vision, speak with your Home Group teacher to get a referral for a screening with Anita or Hayley.
Take care of your eyes this JulEYE and beyond!
