Message from the Principals
Welcome Back to Term 4!
It's with great enthusiasm and a sense of accomplishment that we usher in Term 4 of the school year. As we return from a well-deserved break, it's the perfect time to reflect on the journey so far and look ahead to the exciting possibilities that await us in the final stretch of the academic year. It is important students are demonstrating our school values of courage, aspiration, growth and respect on a daily basis to earn important VIP points. This term promises to be action packed with great learning, extra curricula activities, excursions, celebrations and milestones. Keep an eye out for the many important upcoming events. We look forward to seeing many of you at the Arts Showcase. Please remember to RSVP if you haven’t already.
Let's approach this term with a positive mindset, a commitment to learning, underpinned by respectful behaviour. Together, we will make the most of Term 4, and no matter the challenges we face, we will overcome them with determination and resilience.
Wishing you all a fantastic Term 4 filled with growth, success, and unforgettable moments!

Attendance Matters
We all want the best for our children – for their futures to be as bright as possible. Showing up every day to school really matters. It gives your child every chance to learn, grow and find their interests.
This last stretch of the school year can sometimes be tricky. Keep it up, because each day is another chance to:
- be around friends
- learn new things
- find interests
- create dream futures (whatever that may be!).
If you’re looking for tips on how to create better attendance habits, visit the Anything can happen website.
Please always talk to us if you’re having trouble getting your child to school. We’re here to help.
Arts Showcase

Big Picture News
Year 11/12 Big Picture students and staff have been busy completing assessments for their International Big Picture Learning Credential (IBPLC) this term. Some of our cohort of Year 11/12 students are pictured with their advisors Liz and Therese. Year 12 students leave with a portfolio of evidence of their learning which is accepted for university entry, employment and further education such as apprenticeships.
Big Picture students continue working hard to produce high quality work in conjunction with real life mentors. We are partnering with ‘Story Island Project’ once again to develop student’s writing and produce a book as evidence of what they learn. Students will write about a story from their own lives in a book titled “Little Mysteries of me.”
Sienna joined our learning community this year and is already kicking goals. She recently completed a one week learning experience with Pennicott Wilderness Tours learning about hospitality and tourism. She was so valued that they offered her a job! Sienna’s real passion is hair and she is highly valued at her internship at Rebel at Heart and is examining the possibility of a School Based Apprenticeship.
Sophie and Samm were both finalists in the Tasmanian 2023 poetry slam competition travelling to Launceston with friends, family and teacher advisors Alan and Liz. They both performed original pieces and competed with professional poets from around the state. Congratulations to both students on creating such a high standard of writing and performance.
Patrick has been accepted to a Certificate 2 in Animal Care at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. Bonorong usually only take students who are over 18 but Patrick’s knowledge and passion for reptiles has resulted in them accepting him onto their course. It is the first time they have accepted a student under 18. Hamish has recently returned from pursuing his interest in the armed forces with two days work experience at Derwent Army Barracks.
Violet is busy applying for the National Gallery Art School Scholarship 2024 and we wish her the best of luck with her application. Students lucky enough to be awarded this scholarship spend a week in the National Gallery in Canberra. You can see her work exhibited at HCHS Arts Showcase on Thursday 2 November on the New Town Campus.
Taylor’s knowledge and passion for contemporary music will be on show when she presents a slot on Edge Radio. You can listen to Taylor every Tuesday on Edge Radio 99.3FM.
James continues to pursue his interest in butchery and recently started a new placement two days a week at Steel and Stone Butchery.
Families currently interested in finding out more about Big Picture should contact Cameron on 0407 041 645 or email cameron.gluskie@decyp.tas.gov.au.

9/10 Hospitality
Our focus this term is ‘how to be of service’. Students are feeling more comfortable working as part of a team and team leaders are learning to delegate tasks and be quality controllers so that the final food product is high quality and looks fabulous.
We are learning about ‘canapes' – a small bitesize morsel to be served at a party of event. Look at what they have achieved. They are not only learning good technique but soft skills like teamwork, good communication, working within a time limit and problem solving. An impressive result in only two sessions.
Amanda Sutton - Hospitality Teacher
9/10 Food Studies
Students are exploring the good, the bad and the ugly of tiktok food trends for 2023. Every lesson starts with a demo and traybakes are on the food trend list. We have made a breakfast berry traybake and a Mexican tortilla pie.
For practical sessions, we have made spaghetti pancake and this week we are making three fold up tortilla hacks – chicken, beef burger and strawberry and Nutella fold up hack. Students enjoyed giving each recipe a thumbs up for approval, or thumbs down, if they would never make it again.

Project Global Citizen for Schools
HCHS students became the first in Tasmania to be part of Project Global Citizen with Craig Shim. Their organisation has worked with executives from global companies such as Air New Zealand and Nike as well as high school and tertiary students on how to build their intercultural skills and understanding. In partnership with Government Education and Training International (GETI), our students participated in a workshop unpacking the Great Ocean Cleanup.
School Musical - We Will Rock You
At the end of Term 3 some very talented HCHS students performed in the School Musical - We Will Rock You. A big thank you to Ms Wilson, Mr Sweeney, Ms Stowe, Ms Anderton, Ms Braeden, Ms Hughes, our performers and all of the other staff and students who worked together to make it all happen. Congratulations!
Tell Someone
All children in Tasmania have a right to be known, safe, well and learning. We are highly committed to the safety of all students at our school.
Earlier this month, DECYP launched the Tell Someone initiative, to raise awareness in the community about child sexual abuse and grooming.
The Tell Someone website gives children and young people clear advice on what to do in situations where they feel worried, unsafe or unsure. It also gives adults advice and support on how to respond if they suspect or know a child is being groomed or sexually abused or is at risk of harm.
Please visit the website, read the information, and try to find a suitable time to talk with your children about this issue and the resources available. It’s important that you both understand the possible signs of sexual abuse or grooming behaviour, and how to stay safe online and offline.
If reading this information has caused you distress, please visit DECYP’s website for a list of support services.
Please contact the school if you have any questions about this information.
Major Re-development Plans for 2024 - New Town Campus
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJ870i69vh0
Check out the digital flythrough that shows how the New Town Campus might look following the major redevelopment of our school, due to commence next year. The works plan for the redevelopment has also been released for feedback and can be viewed at https://www.decyp.tas.gov.au/pro.../hobart-city-high-school/
The redevelopment will create connections between existing and upgraded facilities through significant internal alterations that integrate the learning and common areas, as well as indoor and outdoor spaces. The works plan has been shaped through extensive staff, student, and community consultation and feedback on it can be provided to getinvolved@decyp.tas.gov.au from now until Friday 10 November.
Student Assistance Scheme (STAS) 2024
Parents/guardians who have not applied for STAS previously (and do not have an existing STAS file) can apply online for STAS 2024 at Student Assistance Scheme (STAS) or simply Google STAS to be taken to the link.
Letters advising of STAS approval (or otherwise) will be posted to all families with existing files in the STAS database in mid-November.
If a parent/guardian has received STAS in 2023 and wishes to add a new/additional student to their STAS record they simply need to email their name, the student’s full name, date of birth, school, and grade in 2024 and they will be added to the existing STAS file.
For queries please contact stas@decyp.tas.gov.au
School Improvements
Over the holidays construction commenced on the new tiered seating and outdoor learning area spaces on the Ogilvie Campus. With the planting of mature trees to also provide shade, we look forward to these spaces being used in the near future.
